PGA Championship Golf Betting Tips 2021

The year's second Major is here! Who will win the Wanamaker Trophy?

PGA Championship Golf Betting Tips 2021

Beware the injured golfer! Just two months after surgery on a dislocated kneecap and clearly still not 100 percent, Brooks Koepka goes into the weekend at Kiawah Island as 4-1 favourite to claim a PGA Championship treble.

This teak-tough collector of Majors – half of his eight Tour victories have come on the biggest golfing stages – stands one back of 50-year-old Phil Mickelson and Lodevicus Theodorus Oosthuizen, better known as Louis or Shrek, after rounds of 69 and 71.

Four under par after 36 holes doesn’t sound amazing but we’re talking about the fearsome Ocean course here, the longest in a major championship history, not some Mickey Mouse resort track where birdies are there for taking.

Provided the knee holds up, it could be a high-five in more ways than one for the 31-year-old Floridian as most of the marquee names are well over par or else on their way home.

Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas, the two top-ranked players in the world, fall into the latter category while pre-tournament favourite Rory McIlroy, world number 3 Jon Rahm and the well-backed Jordan Spieth look too far back to take a hand.

Only Bryson De Chambeau of the market leaders is under par and the “mad scientist” is so error-prone – seven bogeys so far – that making up the four-shot deficit will require greater discipline than he has so far shown.

McIlroy’s downfall has not been the flat stick but the five bogey sixes he has taken on the eight par fives over the first two days. Normally he’d have birdied, say, three of those five, so that’s eight shots he has frittered away and, guess what, he is eight off the pace.

What a fairytale it would be if Lefty Phil Mickelson could win, 16 years after his lone PGA success, but much as I would love it to happen, how can you back a guy who has not posted even a top-20 since the official start of the 2020-2021 began last September?

And although Oosthuizen is a Major winner (2010 Open at St Andrews), the South African has never won a solo event on American soil. As a runner-up in all four Majors, he’s far more likely to be the bridesmaid again rather than the bride.

With Branden Grace and the underrated Christiaan Bezuidenhout sharing fourth place with new Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, there is a three-pronged South African attack on a Major not won by a Springbok since Gary Player 49 years ago.

Matsuyama is loving the adulation he’s getting as the first Japanese male to win a Major and that big confidence booster could lift him to the giddy heights of knocking off back-to-back Majors.

With four places available, the 15-2 for Matsuyama and 20-1 Grace will attract each-way punters, along with the 6-1 on offer about Oosthuizen.
