Rory McIlroy has revealed he will miss this week’s BMW PGA Championship at the new-look Wentworth with a rib injury.

In a statement released through the European Tour, the world number two said:  “Having had a reaction to my earlier rib injury, I have been advised to take a conservative approach to my recovery which unfortunately means I have to withdraw from the BMW PGA Championship next week.

“It’s a disappointing decision to have to make, but I have to ensure I make a full recovery. I will now continue the process of preparing my game for the US Open and the rest of the season”.

The four-time major winner initially had six weeks off with a rib injury after the South African Open in January, which is thought to have been caused by rigorous product testing in the off-season after Nike announced they would no longer make equipment.

European Tour Chief Executive Keith Pelley said: “There is no question that Rory will be missed at the BMW PGA Championship but his health is the most important thing and we wish him a speedy recovery.”

McIlroy is due to play Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Country Club on 1st-4th June which is two weeks before the US Open at Erin Hills.

If he misses the Memorial, he will go into the US Open without playing competitively for a month after finishing in a tie for 35th at the Players Championship unless he opts to play the FedEx St. Jude Classic the week before.

World number five Henrik Stenson headlines the field this week at Wentworth including Olympic Gold medallist and Masters runner-up Justin Rose.

Also in the field are defending champion Chris Wood, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Fitzpatrick and Thomas Pieters.
