Editor’s Choice 2019

TaylorMade has always been a brand that pushes the boundaries of innovation to the limits, especially when it comes to its driver technology and the new M5 is no exception. It has managed to create a club that builds upon the excellent M3 driver and performs even better in a multitude of ways and because of this, the M5 was one of the first products to secure a place on our Editor’s Choice List.

Advanced Technology

Drivers are subject to many design limitations. One such example is around COR (coefficient of restitution), a measurement of the energy transfer between the collision of clubface and ball. The limit is 0.83, meaning no more than 83 per cent of the energy can be transferred from the club to the ball.

On the new TaylorMade M5 driver, each clubhead is said to be made with a non-conforming clubface beyond legal COR limits. Every head is individually speed tested and then injected with a specific amount of tuning resin, via two ports in the heel and toe areas of the face, that reduces the COR to just inside the limit. This tech has been combined with Twist Face, helping heel and toe strikes fly longer and straighter.

This clever design led to an immediate increase in ball speed when tested against the M3. This was no doubt assisted by the more flexible Hammerhead 2.0 slot, which is said to increase the size of the sweetspot and preserve ball speed on off-centre strikes.

We could then fine-tune our launch characteristics and ball flight via the new Inverse T-Track, features two 10g weights that can be moved to a whole host of positions, many of which still maintain high levels of forgiveness.

Improved Looks

The M5 is a clear step-up aesthetically too. The matte finish on the larger carbon fibre piece adds premium appeal and the longer, narrower grey section is more effective at highlighting aim.

To conclude, picking the M5 for our Editors Choice List took little discussion thanks to its combination of incredible technology, improved adjustability, upgraded looks and general appeal to any golfer.
