Cool Casey cruises to victory in Dubai

Paul Casey claimed a milestone 15th European Tour title after a closing 70 earned him a four-shot victory in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

The 43-year-old Englishman has an excellent record in the United Arab Emirates, with victories in Abu Dhabi in 2007 and 2009, and he made it a desert hat-trick as he finished 17 under par at Emirates Golf Club, four shots ahead of South African Brandon Stone, with Scotland’s Bob MacIntyre at 12 under back in third.

Casey entered the final day with a one-shot lead over MacIntyre, and while he turned in level-par 35, that was enough for a three-shot advantage, which had been extended to five with five to play after the Scot dropped a handful of shots around the turn. That gap was trimmed over the closing holes, but Casey never looked in any real danger as he cruised to a triumph that moves him back into the top 20 in the world ranking.

“I’m all emotional with wins, but this one is such a prestigious event,” he said. “And 15 wins is pretty cool too. I wanted 15. The European Open victory in 2019 is the last and this is such an iconic event, so I’m so happy.”

He added: “I think the whole of 2020 has been very strange, and still is very strange, and just I’m very thankful to be able to be out here playing golf. We had some fans this week, they were amazing. Obviously not a lot, because we’re still in the middle of a pandemic, but to have something like this happen, hopefully that can bring happiness to other people, as well.”
