John Daly will play in next week’s US PGA Championship with the aid of a golf buggy, after the 53-year-old former champion said that arthritis in his right knee is preventing him from walking more than six holes at a time.
Daly, who has a lifetime exemption into the PGA Championship following his win at Crooked Stick in 1991, successfully filed a request to the PGA of America to use a buggy under the Americans with Disabilities Act. He will become the first player to make use of a buggy during a major tournament since Casey Martin in the 2012 US Open.
Last year, Daly asked permission to use a buggy at the US Senior Open, which was denied by the USGA. He subsequently vowed never to play in another USGA event.
Worried about the potential backlash from spectators and other players, Daly said: “I hope I don’t get a lot of grief. My knee is screwed. I had the meniscus cut out. I have osteoarthritis so bad. I can walk up a hill, I just can’t walk down one.”
Daly has missed the cut in the last five PGA Championships, while his last appearance at Bethpage Black at the 2002 US Open, saw him finish tied 70th.
Daly also claims to be suffering from dizzy spells, an illness that led him to withdraw from this week’s Regions Tradition, the first senior major of the year.
