Golf courses in England set to reopen on March 29

Golf courses in England are set to be allowed to reopen in England from March 29 as the government begins to ease coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

Prime minister Boris Johnson is set to reveal a roadmap out of lockdown later today (Monday) that will give the green light for golfers to get back onto the course for the first time since January 4.

It will bring an end to 84 days of golf club closures throughout England. The Welsh government is likely to follow the same advice, although golf courses in Scotland have re-opened throughout the third UK national lockdown.

It is likely that tee times will be restricted two-balls only in the first instance, putting yet more pressure on clubs with full memberships and thousands of golfers eager to get back onto the golf course as the UK emerges from one of the coldest and wettest winters in recent times.

The relaxation of measures is the first stage of a four-part roadmap expected to include the reopening of non-essential retail and hospitality in the coming months. This means that golf clubs are unlikely to be able to welcome back customers into pro shops until mid-April at the earliest and clubhouse bars and dining rooms until May or June, although the warmer weather will enable golfers to enjoy drinks and meals outside.
