Keep calm & carry on! Golf clubs remain open for business

Golfers have been given the official green light to carry on playing, providing they follow government guidelines on self-distancing and other key health and safety procedures.

The UK’s chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, has responded to a health select committee question about playing golf during the coronavirus crisis by effectively saying it is an activity that is allowable under current guidelines.

In answer to a specific question about golf tabled by Dean Russell, the conservative MP for Watford, Sir Patrick said: “It is ok, as long as you keep a distance. We’re not asking everyone to be completely isolated. The specific advice is to avoid close contact.”

In order to avoid group gatherings and minimise contact, a number of golf clubs have closed their clubhouses but kept their courses open so that golfers can gain the essential health benefits of moderate exercise while minimising the risk of becoming infected. Pro shops are also widely open for the payment of green fees, with equipment available to buy as per normal, although many clubs have shut down bars and restaurants, with only snacks and canned drinks on offer.

Other measures taken to ensure golfer’s safety on the golf course include the removal of flags from holes, inverting cups, and a ban on sharing buggies.
