Koepka will need captain’s pick to make US Ryder Cup team

LIV Golf player Brooks Koepka will have to rely on a captain’s pick from US Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson after falling out of the automatic qualifying places for the team in the final event.

Koepka’s fifth major title in the US PGA Championship in May put him in a strong place to qualify for the US team, but playing in the LIV Golf League meant his opportunities to earn more points were limited to the season’s other majors.

He then finished 17th in the US Open and 64th in the Open Championship and was fifth in the Ryder Cup standings at the start of this week’s final counting event, the BMW Championship.

However, Max Homa’s tie for fifth and Xander Schauffele’s share of eighth was good enough to move them above Koepka, who dropped to seventh as a result.

The six automatic qualifiers for the team are Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Patrick Cantlay, Homa and Schauffele.

The six players behind Koepka in the points list are Jordan Spieth, Cameron Young, Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, Sam Burns and Rickie Fowler, with Johnson set to name his six captain’s picks on August 29.
