Si Woo Kim swoops at Sony Open

Si Woo Kim of South Korea birdied his final two holes to record his second consecutive 64 and win the PGA Tour’s Sony Open in Honolulu.

Eight birdies in the final round helped Kim finish the week with on 18-under, beating third-round leader Hayden Buckley by a stroke.

The key moment came at the par-3 17th, where Kim’s tee shot missed the green. He chipped in from about 28 feet away for a birdie that proved pivotal. The chip-in tied him with Buckley at 17 under, and his two-putt birdie at the par-5 18th at Waialae Country Club got him to 18 under. Kim clinched his fourth PGA Tour title when Buckley’s birdie effort on 18 to force a play-off slid by the hole.

Kim, 27, who recorded his last PGA Tour victory at The American Express in January 2021, now has four PGA Tour wins to his name, having won the Wyndham Championship in 2016 and The Players Championship in 2017.

Chris Kirk finished third at 15 under, while Surrey’s Ben Taylor tied for fourth at 14 under alongside Andrew Putnam and David Lipsky. The 30-year-old Epsom-born player carded a final-round 69, to go with earlier round of 66, 66 and 65, to enjoy his second highest finish on the PGA Tour, following his third-place finish at the Houston Open in November last year. Taylor has been playing on the Korn Ferry Tour since 2019 but earned his PGA Tour card for the 2022-23 season after finishing ninth on the US second-tier tour in 2022.
