Woods issues recovery update, but no date on comeback

Tiger Woods’s hopes of returning to competitive golf – or any kind of golf – remain in the balance as the 15-time major champion waits on doctor’s orders before being able to swing a club, let alone prepare himself for tournament play.

The 45-year-old, who underwent back surgery last month – the fifth of his career – gave an update on his recovery during Sunday’s coverage of the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles, a tournament that he hosts.

The 2019 Masters champion, who is just one win short of securing a PGA Tour record 83 victories, said he was waiting on the results of an upcoming MRI to see when he might return to action.

“A lot of it’s based on my surgeons and my doctors, my therapists and making sure I do it correctly,” said Woods. “This is the only back I got so I don’t know how much more wiggle room I have left there. “I still working in the gym, still doing the mundane stuff that you have to do for rehab, the little things, before I can start gravitating toward something a little more.”

Woods has so far only been able to practice his putting, and even that has required a new longer shaft in his putter in order to ease the pressure on his back.

Asked whether he was hopeful of being able to compete in the Masters Tournament, which begins on April 8, he replied: “God, I hope so.”
