While earlier this summer, polls were also upset when Britain chose to leave the European Union, prompting the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and instability in England.

And perhaps most surprisingly of all, Leicester City upset the big boys to storm to their first ever Premier League title, and become the only team who aren’t Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal to win it since Blackburn Rovers in 1995.

After all these shocks, it is just a shame no-one placed a bet, as a minimum £1 bet on Brexit, Trump and Claudio Ranieri‘s Leicester would have won you a mammoth £4.5million – £4,530,906 to be precise.

That is with the three scenarios at their longest odds given by bookmaker Ladbrokes – 5000/1 for the Foxes, 150/1 for Repbulican Trump and 5/1 for the 50% chance of Brexit.

And if you laid a £5 treble on the three outcomes, you would’ve paid out £12.5m.

Alex Donohue, a spokesman for Ladbrokes told SunSport: “2016 has been the greatest year for upsets in betting history.

"Thankfully for us there wasn't a single crystal ball working well enough last year for anyone to pick the treble.

"Plenty of punters capitalised on a win for Trump after seeing the first 2 legs come in however and bookies nationwide are paying out millions after another long shot defied the odds.

"If anyone knows how  the run of 2016 upsets will continue there must be the chance to make some decent money before the year is out!"
