The 34-year-old has made just five starts since joining the Chairboys this summer but scored the winner against Exeter on Saturday to prove to boss Gareth Ainsworth he can still hack it at his 15TH club.

Akinfenwa said: “I’d like more game time, the time I’m happy to sit on the bench is the time I pack my boots up and give it up. The gaffer knows that burning desire I have to play.

“He’s always kept me in the loop and he knows I want to play. We sit on the bench and I try to give him evil look sometimes when he’s not putting me on! The gaffer would want me to want to play more.

“Good players want other good players there to push them on and raise their game, and we’ve got a good forward line. There’s nothing worse in football than getting complacent, but the team comes first, and the team’s been doing well.

“It’s always nice to come off the bench and make a impact, but it’s more important to keep the momentum going as the boys were magnificent last Tuesday [beating Crewe 5-1]. I was itching to get on then but the gaffer didn’t put me on.

“I think because we won 5-1 everyone was expecting another goal fest, but Exeter came with a game plan and denied us the space. They came for a draw, but the gaffer made the change and we got the three points.”

Akinfenwa has become a cult hero for his extraordinary size and strength – something which EA Sports’ Fifa games have picked up on and credited.

He has been named the strongest player in the game since 2012.

But the Beast fears his famed power can actually work against him.

Akinfenwa added: “They work hard for an hour and then they see me come on! Some defenders perhaps may be intimidated, others raise their game. My size works against me as well, as some players I would just touch and they would fall over to get a free kick.

“I don’t think it’s just because of the game though, I think they see me come on and think this boy’s a big one. But I’ve played this game for 15 years haven’t changed who I am, I just get more attention.”
