After Timo Werner is forced off from vertigo because of noisy fans… here are seven other bizarre injuries forcing players to be substituted during a game

IN a bizarre turn of events in this week’s Champions League, RB Leipzig star Timo Werner was forced off the pitch due to the noisiness of the crowd.

The hostile atmosphere in Turkey left the German struggling to block out the sound by sticking his fingers in his ears.

Striker Werner, 21, suffers from vertigo and was even given ear plugs by a Leipzig coach in a desperate bid to play on.

However, it wasn’t to be, as the Liverpool target was forced off the pitch, before saying: “I have never seen such an atmosphere in my life. I could not focus on the match.

“I asked for a headset and it did not help either. I still do not feel well.”

Following the bonkers and somewhat unique substitution, we take a look back at seven other barely believable on-pitch ailments…

John Terry gets a guard of honour after being subbed on 26 minutes for Chelsea

JUST last season, John Terry was involved in a farcical substitution of his own.

In the 26th minute, the ex-Chelsea man was taken off against Sunderland - a nod towards his legend status at the Blues and his shirt number, 26.

However, the match came under FA scrutiny after it emerged a number of fans won money, betting on the odd sub.

Then-Sunderland boss David Moyes then admitted his side deliberately put the ball out play, as Terry "deserved a great send-off".

2. IT'S GOOD TO BE BRAD

THE EFL Trophy, the artist formerly known as the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, has long been known as a competition to give a kids a run-out for the lower league sides.

However, farcical new rules state at least five first-team must play in the game or face punitive measures.

Bradford boss Stuart McCall was keen to make the most of any potential loophole, though.

He started first XI goalkeeper Colin Doyle... before subbing him off in the FIRST minute, to give Rouven Sattelmaier a run-out.

After the game, Bantams assistant boss Kenny Black hilariously quipped: "I thought he had a poor 45 seconds."

3. SUB ON, SUB OFF

BACK in 2015, Chilean star Marco Medel was primed and ready to enter the field of play as a substitute.

The Santiago Wanderers ace had completed his pre-match routine and jogged onto the pitch... only to collapse in a heap after just a couple of steps.

Medel was promptly subbed off... talk about an immediate impact.

4. THAT'S RICH

BACK in 2006, Richard Wright was preparing to start in Everton's FA Cup clash at Chelsea.

During the warm-up, he ignored a sign in the goalmouth warning players not to practice in the area.

In a bizarre twist, he stepped back, fell over the sign, twisting his ankle and damaging his shoulder in the process.

He was a rare pre-match sub, replaced by Iain Turner, as the Toffees ran out 4-1 losers.

5. RING THE CHANGES

PAULO DIOGO was once playing in the Swiss Super League, when he set up his Servette team-mate to make it 4-1 against Schaffhausen.

In celebrating the assist, Diogo ran over to the fans and launched himself on the metal barriers.

However, on jumping down, the recently married player failed to realise his wedding ring had caught on a hook.

As he hit the ground, his ring - and most of his finger - were still dangling on the metal barrier.

To rub salt into the wound, he was booked for his trouble...

6. DOG'S LIFE

FOLLOWING a long career with clubs including Manchester City, Wolves and Brentford, Chic Brodie's career came to a disappointing end... thanks to a dog.

In 1970, Brodie charged over to a pitch-invading pooch before tripping over it and damaging his knee ligaments.

On the bonkers incident, Brodie said: "The dog may have been small, but it just happened to be solid."

7. STEP TOO FAR

DURING his days at Manchester United, Alex Stepney suffered arguably the most bizarre injury of all time.

After breaking back into Division One, United's defence were all over the place one fateful afternoon.

In a desperate bid to get the back-four in line, Stepney screamed so loud and so long, he dislocated his jaw.
