In the process Querrey became the first US player to reach the semi-final of a men’s Major since Andy Roddick in 2009.

Ironically it was Murray who Roddick beat back then to set up a final ultimately won by Roger Federer.

Murray was asked about this lack of success – but picked up on the fact the journalist did not make clear it only applied to the men’s game.

During his post-match press conference, Murray corrected what has been termed the reporter’s “casual sexism”.

The journalist said: “Andy, Sam is the first US player to reach a Major semi-final since 2009, how would you describe the -”

Murray interrupts, saying: “Male player.”

The journalist replied: "Beg your pardon?"

And Murray responded: "Male player, right?"

The reporter said: "Yes. First male player. That's for sure."

Since 2009, American superstar Serena Williams - who is pregnant and missing this year's Wimbledon - has won 12 Grand Slam tournaments, including this year's Australian Open.
