Argentina manager Edgardo Bauza ‘to be sacked’ as they struggle to qualify for 2018 World Cup

ARGENTINA manager Edgardo Bauza is set to be sacked as they struggle to qualify for 2018 World Cup, according to reports.

ESPN claim Bauza is a goner after less than a year in charge, with Sevilla coach Jorge Sampaoli top of the AFA’s shortlist to replace him.

Argentina sit a lowly fifth in South American qualifying, having lost 2-0 to Bolivia in the absence of Lionel Messi, who was banned for four games for swearing at an official.

The 2014 finalists looks set to be in a playoff position, against a team from Oceania to make it to the finals in Russia next year.

The AFA’s leadership, under newly elected president Claudio Tapia, are expected to vote overwhelmingly to sack Bauza, who only took over last August.

The former San Lorenzo and Sao Paolo boss, 59, has only won three of his eight games in charge, losing three and drawing two.

Sevilla coach Jorge Sampaoli is allegedly the first choice to replace Bauza – with ESPN also saying the countryman has a clause in his contract with the La Liga club that could see him leave “swimming or walking” to the national team job.

Sampaoli has not yet accepted Sevilla’s offer to extend his contract for another year, with his current deal set to expire in June 2018.

Messi has denied swearing at a linesman on Argentina duty which saw him banned and claims he swore “to the air”.

The Barcelona star believes he has been unfairly victimised by the four-match ban he received, and is adamant he meant no harm to the official.

He scored the only goal of the game in a World Cup qualifying win against Chile last week, but he received the retrospective ban just hours before the second crucial clash with Bolivia.

After being fouled by Jean Beausejour, Messi said “la concha de tu madre”, which translates as “your mother’s ****” — a common curse in Argentina — to Brazilian linesman Emerson Augusto do Carvalho.Aside from the ban, the  five-time Ballon d’Or winner was also given a fine of around £8,100 for his trouble.
