ARSENAL fans will not believe the shocking news that the club bid a record £80million for Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Supporters were pulling their hair out when it seemed Arsene Wenger was up to his usual tricks in the transfer market by trying to nab a bargain.

But behind all the speculation around the collapse of the Jamie Vardy deal Arsenal had not sat on their laurels and did indeed mean serious business.

They made an astonishing offer for Aubameyang but Dortmund turned down the Gunners’ £80m bid and were not interested in doing business..

Instead Wenger was left with little option but to buy Lucas Perez from Deportivo La Coruna for £16m. The Spanish striker is yet to settle at the club and now has a lengthy spell out on the sidelines.

Football agent Vincenzo Morabito has made the bold claim that Napoli were also considering a bid for Aubameyang.

On the back of Napoli’s interest in the Gabon international, Morabito called Borussia Dortmund to enquire about Aubameyang.

As reported by Sportwitness, Morabito said: ''Sometime ago, I called Zorc, Dortmund’s director of football, to talk about Aubameyang, but the ‘no’ was absolutely categorical. I know that this summer, Arsenal offered €90m for Aubameyang, but Borussia didn’t want to hear anything about it.''

Arsenal fans can be forgiven for thinking what might have been had Dortmund accepted, but Gooners have been impressed to their start of the season so far in North London.

Alexis Sanchez has been remarkable leading the line and has drawn comparisons with Luis Suarez with the way he plays which has allowed the likes of Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil to cause havoc.

Arsenal are very much in with a shout of the title, sitting in fourth spot, two points behind leaders Liverpool going into the international break.
