JACK WILSHERE has revealed the real reason he isn’t in England’s World Cup squad – his passport has expired.
The Arsenal star missed out on selection for Gareth Southgate’s 23-man group despite being called up for the last batch of international friendlies in March.
Wilshere’s fitness and injury problems became a major source of concern for the Three Lions boss.
And the ace was told he would not even be making the standby list before Southgate revealed his picks.
However, Wilshere hasn’t taken the snub too badly as he approaches the end of his Emirates contract.
The midfielder posted a picture on social media showing him at the passport office in London, having previously uploaded various snaps depicting his activities throughout each day since the end of the season.
And Wilshere joked to his followers: “Passport expired. Day 14. The real reason I’m not going to Russia.”
With his World Cup hopes over, Wilshere will now be looking to secure a new deal to stay in North London following Arsene Wenger’s exit.
LEGENDS GUNNED DOWN Unai Emery could axe Steve Bould and Jens Lehmann in staff shake-up
Unai Emery has taken over at the Emirates and has just £60million to spend, meaning there are sure to be departures in order to free up funds for new signings.
Emery made a late attempt to sign Fabinho before the Monaco man joined Liverpool on Monday, meaning he is in the market for a new midfielder, and possibly signalling the end of Wilshere’s time at the club.
