AN ARSENAL legend has backed the Gunners to make an audacious swoop for Tottenham contract rebel Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgian defender looks like he will be sold this summer after failing to agree an extension with Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Alderweireld, who only has a year left on his current deal, is believed to be holding out for £150,000-a-week with the club refusing to offer anything more than £110K.
And Perry Groves, who played over 150 times for Arsenal, has backed his former side to repeat what they did by snatching Sol Campbell from their bitter rivals back in 2001 with a move for the 29-year-old.
Speaking to Sporting Bet, Groves said: “Toby Alderweireld would be my dream signing for Arsenal this summer.
“I think he’s one of the best central defenders in the Premier League and I would love us to take advantage of his contract situation at Tottenham.
“It would be hilarious.”
Alderweireld has been restricted to just 22 appearances for club and country due to injury problems and his contract wrangle.
NAB HIM Arsenal step up interest in £50m Lyon winger Nabil Fekir
He made his first appearance in two months a fortnight ago when Spurs drew 1-1 at Brighton.
The ace will be hoping to be involved when Tottenham take on Watford at Wembley this evening.
