Soyuncu, 22, has made 55 appearances for the Bundesliga club since his move in 2016 and is believed to be worth around £35million.

Arsenal are desperate to bolster the spine of their team with a new goalkeeper, central defender and midfielder the top priorities.

And it appears new boss Unai Emery is close to making his first official signing after Soyuncu confirmed Arsenal are interested in him.

When asked about a potential move to the Emirates, he said: “Arsenal are one of the most important clubs in England.

“I know they’re interested in me, but there’s nothing finalised yet about my transfer.

“After the national team camp we’ll have talks.”

With Per Mertesacker calling it a day and Laurent Koscielny crocked with a long-term Achilles injury, Arsenal are also targeting Borussia Dortmund’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

The 29-year-old Greek international, who has spent the last seven years playing in Germany, is close to agreeing personal terms in a cut-price £16million deal.

He has just a year to run on his current deal and Dortmund are ready to flog him on the cheap instead of losing him for nothing in 12-months time.

Sokratis has played for Dortmund for five years, joining from Werder Bremen, after playing for Genoa and AC Milan after leaving Greece.

He has 79 caps for the national team, representing them at Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup.
