Ashes 2017: Five key moments from day four as Alastair Cook reaches 12,000 Test runs and the Marsh brothers nearly give Steve Smith a heart attack

AUSTRALIA took full control of the Fifth Test at the SCG and are on the cusp of completing a 4-0 Ashes win after another bruising day for Joe Root’s side.

After Sean and Mitch Marsh both went to centuries before lunch, Australia declared on 649-7 and quickly got to work on the fragile England batting lineup – who finished the day 93/4.

Here are five moments worth watching from yet another tough day Down Under, where temperatures soared to 47 degrees in Sydney.

Brothers in arms

SHAUN MARSH needed just two more to complete his century after being left marooned on 98* overnight.

He wasted no time in knocking them off, crashing Moeen Ali through the covers and setting the tone for the day.

His brother Mitchell embraced him warmly and would do so again as he brought up his own ton just over an hour later.

Although Steve Smith wasn’t over delighted with their antics, which came before the ball went dead – and almost saw them run out.

Just a Stone throw

IT needed something special to dismiss Shaun Marsh who eased his way past 150 with the minimum of fuss.

And it came from the arm of Mark Stoneman, who gave England fans something to cheer in an otherwise torrid afternoon session.

Never breaking stride, the opener hurled an inch perfect throw to send the Aussie No5 back to the shed for 156.

Cooking the record books

ENGLAND’s reply started in the perfect manner – with yet another record for Alastair Cook.

He moved to 12,000 runs with a classic little prod through midwicket and was warmly received by the SCG crowd, moving to sixth on the all-time list of Test run scorers.

Just a shame that things went quickly downhill from there.

Cookie in a spin

AS expected, Nathan Lyon loved bowling on a deteriorating track.

And he came up with a beauty to dismiss the former England captain.

Drift, drip and then ripping turn, Cook was unable to get anything near it – with this wicket sparking wild celebrations as the Aussies sniffed blood.

Cooling off

TEMPERATURES at the SCG hit record levels in the afternoon session – leaving spectators and players baking in the heat.

It was 47.1c on the field and Stuart Broad was seen wearing an ice scarf early in the day.

But it was in the stands where the best solution was found – and it’s always the simple ideas that are the best.

This time it’s spraying fans with a hose and water. Why not?
