Ashes 2017: Five key moments from day two as Steve Smith continues to break records and Joe Root’s brother finds his voice

STEVE SMITH and Usman Khawaja put on a century stand in the evening session to leave Australia in pole position at the SCG.

After England’s tail wagged in the morning to haul Joe Root’s side to 346 all out, the Aussies got to work on a flat pitch and now trail by just 153.

Here are five moments from another incident packed day of Ashes cricket Down Under.

Catches win matches

IS there anything that Steve Smith can’t do?

Dawid Malan started the day hoping to convert his well made half-century from day one into another three figures.

But after a few early scares, he finally succumbed to a bullet from Starc  – and a wonder catch from the Aussie skipper.

Jekyll and Hyde fielding

AS good as that was from Smith, this was equally as bad from Cummins and Hazlewood.

The pair might have been incredible with the ball in this series – but these drops were like something from the village green.

In successive overs, two dolleys were put down giving Tom Curran and Moeen Ali each a life. Try not to laugh.

Broad is back

ENGLAND came out firing after lunch and Stuart Broad needed just two balls to make his breakthrough.

Racing in to support Jimmy Anderson at the other end, Root’s men have targeted Cam Bancroft’s iffy footwork in the last three Tests.

It worked again as the opener was emphatically bowled through the gate. His Test future hangs in the balance.

Chasing the Don

WE’RE running out of words to describe just how good Steve Smith is.

So take a look at the numbers instead, because that can put his achievements into perspective.

He’s now the joint-second fastest player in Test history to reach 6,000 runs – tied with a certain Garfield Sobers.

Brotherly love

WHAT would you do for your brother?

Billy Root, who himself plays for Nottinghamshire, is over in Oz supporting his old brother in the best possible way.

With a pint in his hand and belting out songs with the Barmy Army.

Fantastic.
