Ashes 2017: Watch five key moments from day two at the WACA as Jonny Bairstow grabs his first ton against Australia and Steve Smith turns on the style

ENGLAND may be left to rue a morning session collapse as Australia fought their way back into the third Test on day two in Perth.

Resuming on 305-4 overnight, Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow were making serene progress, until the loss of Malan sparked a collapse which saw the tourists skittled for 403.

Australia are 203-3 in reply, with Steve Smith closing in on a magnificent century.

Here’s Jonny

JONNY BAIRSTOW resumed on 75* this morning – and wasted no time in getting to his maiden Ashes century.

He played big drives against the ailing seamers, whilst also attacking Nathan Lyon, reaching three figures just over an hour after the restart.

The Yorkshireman proved that his move to No6 was correct – and even gave his helmet a celebratory headbutt.

Deja vu

WE couldn’t have an England innings without a disastrous collapse.

Once Dawid Malan was out and Bairstow was left with the tail, his own game became stretched as he started to worry about running out of partners.

It was a procession, as England lost five wickets in under an hour, unable to cope with the pace and bounce.

Over for Dave

DAVID WARNER and Cam Bancroft came out looking to be positive – and were rollicking along at nearly 4-an-over.

Enter Craig Overton, whose effort balls were accompanied by some real bounce from the pitch.

He was rewarded for his endeavour with a key wicket, Warner nicking behind straight after drinks.

Best in the world

STEVE SMITH was absolutely superb.

He didn’t give the England bowlers an inch on a flat pitch, attacking when necessary and dragging his side out of a potential hole along with Usman Khawaja.

But he showed he is human, as Overton racked him hard on the gloves and helmet just before tea.

Sadly England couldn’t replicate anything similar after the break, with the Australian captain dominating until close.

Start the Khaw

ENGLAND desperately needed a wicket before the close – and it was Chris Woakes who delivered.

With Overton exiting thanks to a possible side strain, it was over to the third England seamer to try find Root a breakthrough.

And he did, angling in a beauty that did for Khawaja through the gate – and going on to hit the top of off-stump despite the review.

It’s delicately poised ahead of day three.
