Ashes 2017: Five key moments from the WACA on day one as Dawid Malan hits a maiden century and DRS does for Mark Stoneman

ENGLAND’s supporters were finally given something to shout about Down Under as the tourists ended day one of the third Test on a commanding 305-4.

After losing four wickets before tea, it looked like more of the same from Joe Root’s men – before an epic 174-run stand from Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow stunned the Aussies and tipped the momentum back England’s way.

Malan went on to claim a maiden Test ton in a day of high drama at the WACA.

Chef fails again

DESPITE ending the day in a good position, England’s middle-order was once again tasked with building an innings after the top batsman failed.

Alastair Cook received an award for his 150th Test before taking to the field – where he never really looked comfortable against the express pace on a bouncy pitch.

Mitchell Starc got one to arc in, beating the former skipper for pace, and it was plummer than plum.

He gets Vin, he gets out

WHAT do England do about James Vince and that troublesome No3 position?

For the ninth time in 11 innings, he was caught behind with a nothing shot shortly before the lunch break.

It was a frustrating shot from Vince, who had played really well and left anything short of a length – but either his concentration or patience snapped.

The dismissal left Joe Root coming in to face 6 balls before lunch, leaving the skipper in a very awkward spot.

DRS woes for plucky Stoneman

ONCE again in this series, England felt grieved at a third umpire decision – and for good reason.

The Aussies thought the excellent Stoneman had gloved through to Paine, but the on-field decision was given not out.

They sent it upstairs, only for Aleem Dar to look at two replays and Snicko – before concluding that there actually was a nick and the opener should walk.

With the evidence available at that point, the decision shouldn’t have been overturned with a reasonable doubt being applied to Stoneman – nobody could tell if his glove was on the bat or not until a replay almost 10 minutes later.

Joe Root was hopping mad.

I wasn’t Lyon, Skip

IN that Day 4 carnage at Adelaide, Steve Smith’s reviews came under plenty of scrutiny – especially from the Barmy Army.

The Aussie skipper went chasing another here, despite Nathan Lyon telling him in no uncertain terms that it was too high for LBW.

Sure enough, the spinner was proved right – and just to prove his point, didn’t bother walking to the middle to watch the replays.

Ton up for Dawid

WHAT a phenomenal innings from Dawid Malan.

He’s calmness at the crease was only briefly disturbed by some crashing cover drives and aggressive stuff against the short ball.

The England No5 kept the Aussies guessing throughout – and will never forget smashing this pull to bring up a maiden Test ton.
