The England skipper was fast asleep when the urn was officially handed over to the hosts, but the controversy did not stop there.

Aussie captain Steve Smith was centre stage as his side hoisted the Ashes trophy and replica urn.

But behind them was a giant blue hand with the Australia flag holding up four fingers.

The other side of them stood a huge white hand, covered in the St George’s cross, with a clenched fist – signalling the 4-0 victory for the hosts.

The players themselves appeared not to care less but viewers were left angered by what they saw.

One posted online: “Cricket Australia should be ashamed.

“Using a huge image of a hand covered in the Australian flag with four fingers to indicate the score in the Ashes series is akin to using a hand with only the middle finger on show.

“Makes me embarrassed to be Australian.”
