Australian Open 2018: Caroline Wozniacki cruises into quarter finals

CAROLINEE WOZNIACKI was more pleased with her trickshot than her routine victory.

No 2 seed Wozniacki was thrilled to pull off a “Tweener” between-the-legs effort during her 6-3 6-0 demolition of Magdalena Rybarikova

Wozniacki didn’t even win the point with her spectacular shot but said: “My confidence is high, as you can tell – I tried a Tweener and it actually went in!

“I was pretty pleased with that. Even in practice I can make a fool of myself trying them.

“When it went in, I thought: ‘I’m done. I can leave the court right now.’

As it was Wozniacki was only out there for just over an hour.

Wimbledon 2017 semi-finalist Rybarikova achieved an early break of serve, but the Dane recovered immediately and the Slovakian won just one more game after that.

Wozniacki looked more like the player who ended 2017 as WTA Tour Finals champion than the one who had had to save two match points against Jana Fett in the second round.

Asked about winning the season’s climactic event in Singapore, Wozniacki said: “It gave me a lot of confidence.

“I thought I played some of my best tennis ever there. I’ve been playing really well.”

Wozniacki’s quarter final opponent will be Carla Suarez Navarro.

The Spaniard was a set and a double break down to Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit but found a way back into the match.

Suarez Navarro eventually won 4-6 6-4 8-6 to reach her sixth Grand Slam quarter final.
