Barcelona legend Xavi donates personal yacht in bid to help refugees cross Mediterranean


BARCELONA legend Xavi has donated his personal luxury yacht in a bid to help refugees cross the Mediterranean Sea.

The Spanish midfielder, 36 – now playing in Qatar – handed the keys to his boat over to non-governmental organisation Proactiva Open Arms (POA) this week.

The NGO are dedicated to saving lives at sea and are currently stationed in Lesvos where they are helping migrants attempting to enter Greece.

However, the vessel itself will NOT be used, instead, it will now be sold at a public auction with funds raised going towards the charitable cause.

The POA released a video on their Facebook page with the following message: “The soccer player Xavi Hernández collaborates with Proactiva Open Arms with the donation of a recreational craft to be auctioned in the near future.

“He was introduced to our work a while ago and decided to donate his yacht to obtain more resources in order to ensure the permanence of the mission.

“Thank you, Xavi, gestures like yours, will save many lives.”

Xavi is currently turning out for Al Sadd in Qatar and has also taken on an ambassadorial role for the 2022 World Cup, much to many’s frustration.

The Spaniard turned out an incredible 133 times for his country between 2000 and 2014, netting 13 times.

On top of that, he played a whopping 767 times for La Liga giants Barcelona, finding the net an impressive 85 times along the way.
