The Barcelona and Argentina striker posted on Facebook expressing his sadness at how the natural disaster has wrecked so many people’s lives.

Messi wrote: “Saddened by the events that have taken place over the past few weeks, in which many people have suffered the consequences of natural disasters in Mexico, the United States, Puerto Rico, as well as Southern Asia, Sierra Leone and in other places.

“My thoughts and support go out to the families of the victims and all of those who have been affected.”

Messi is not the first professional footballer to show their support for the relief effort in the central American country.

SunSport previously reported how West Ham striker Javier Hernandez set up an initiative called “#YoXMexico” along with countryman Miguel Layun, who plays for Porto.

They are trying to raise funds that will help deliver food and supplies to those most affected by the disaster.

Hernandez said: “Being so far from Mexico and seeing the suffering of our compatriots in the distance has been very painful.

“So, after discussing it, we decided to take the initiative for Mexico and give our people a helping hand.

“We know that many see us as a source of inspiration, but in this case, what has inspired us is to see millions of Mexicans take to the streets and to lend a hand without asking for anything in return.

“We hope, with this initiative, to help those who need it and motivate more people to do it with us.

“It is a fantastic gesture and we hope it can help us raise funds that will make a difference in Mexico."

Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Aguero have previously also sent out messages of support for Mexico on social media.
