Bayern Munich skipper Philipp Lahm fails to defend teammate Franck Ribery for flailing elbow against Borussia Dortmund

BAYERN MUNICH captain Philipp Lahm has warned his own teammate Franck Ribery to stop with his flailing elbows.

The Frenchman received a yellow card after catching defender Felix Passlack twice with his elbow in Bayern’s 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup.

Dortmund were stunned that Ribery failed to receive a straight red for his actions and even Lahm admitted that the 33-year-old was lucky to remain on the pitch.

Speaking at a press conference, Lahm said: “I have told him that he should keep his hands off his opponents.

“I think he understands what I mean, but you cannot just change his character altogether, that is rather difficult.

“I just hope that things like this do not happen again in the future, but I obviously cannot guarantee anything.”

Understandably Passlack was far from impressed with Ribery with the decision and spoke to reporters after the game.

Visibly angry, he said: “He lashed out with his arms. It was a clear red.”

It is not the first time Ribery has caused controversy by crossing the boundaries against Dortmund.

In the German Cup final in May, the winger sensationally appeared to gauge the eye of Gonzalo Castro following a scuffle in the dugout but managed to escape a red card.

And in the 2013 Champions League final, Ribery elbowed former striker Robert Lewandowski as Bayern went onto lift the trophy.
