However, having reached the play-off final last season, Bradford finished a lowly 11th and it was decided a change was needed.

Following his departure, Grayson released a statement which read: “After conversations with the owners I have decided to turn down the option to extend my contract.

“This was an extremely difficult decision as I have enjoyed my time at Valley Parade.

“I would like to thank everyone at Bradford City, from the owners to the supporters, who have turned out in their numbers both home and away since I have been manager of their club.

“I wish the club all the best for the future.”

This was Grayson’s second job of the campaign, having started the term in charge of Sunderland, who had just been relegated from the Premier League.

However, a dismal start to the season saw them deep in the relegation mire and he was dismissed following a 3-3 draw against Bolton on October 31.

Grayson has also managed Blackpool, Leeds, Huddersfield and Preston — and has been tipped to take over at Scunthorope next season.
