Brazil’s first competitive home loss since 1975 was certain after Thomas Muller, new World Cup record scorer Miroslav Klose, two-goal Toni Kroos and Sami Khedira struck.

Wideman Andre Schurrle hit two more after the break before his then-Chelsea team-mate Oscar replied in the final minute.

Many Brazil fans ended up cheering every German pass – a sad, surreal touch to a searing, sensational display.

Victory for Brazil in Berlin next year would be no consolation for the South Americans’ summer of 2014.

But it might help to confirm they are a serious force in time for the finals in Russia.
