British Lions and Wales rugby ace Scott Gibbs holds vigil at wife’s bedside as she fights for her life after being struck by motorbike in Italy


A RUGBY legend was today at his wife’s hospital bedside as she fights for her life after being struck by a motorcycle in Italy.

British Lions and Wales star Scott Gibbs, 43, was walking with wife Kate, 32, when she was hit at a pedestrian crossing.

Travel writer Kate suffered "major head trauma" including a fractured skull and multiple spinal fractures.

A spokesman for the family said she is "critically ill but stable" in hospital in Verona, northern Italy.

The couple have lived in Verona for a year where former rugby league and union legend Scott works as a director for property investment company.

Kate is being treated at the Borgo Trento hospital in the city and her family has flown out to join Scott at her bedside.

Italian police are investigating the crash which happened last Friday.

A family spokesman on behalf of Gibbs said: "Kate Gibbs, wife of former Wales International and British Lions star Scott Gibbs, has been hospitalised after being involved in a traffic collision.

"She was struck by a motorcycle on the afternoon of Friday December 2 whilst the couple were walking near their home in Verona, Italy.

"Mrs Gibbs suffered major head trauma and multiple head and spinal fractures. She is currently in a critical but stable condition and is surrounded by her immediate family. Scott Gibbs was not injured in the collision.

"Scott has expressed his gratitude for the immense support Kate and the family have received from the hospital and from friends across the globe."

The couple had just celebrated their second wedding anniversary after Scott proposed in Monaco on St David's Day in 2013.

They married the following year in Cape Town where they were living at the time. They have also lived in Aspen, Colorado.

Dual code star Scott played international rugby league and union for Wales and was man of the tour when the British and Irish Lions beat South Africa in 1997.

He played for union clubs including, Neath, Swansea and the Ospreys and played league for St Helens.

Scott retired from in 2004 after playing 53 Tests for Wales before moving into property investment.
