Canelo Alvarez puts Gennady Golovkin rematch plans aside to help victims of earthquake in Mexico home

CANELO Alvarez has put his controversial draw with Gennady Golovkin to the back of his mind by helping the people devastated by the recent earthquake in Mexico.

The middleweight title fight last weekend ended with GGG retaining all his belts and Canelo leaving empty handed.

But he dedicated his time and strength to the the System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF) to help victims of the earthquake that struck Oaxaca and Chiapas.

Canelo said: “Today we interrupt the activities of the volunteers of the DIF tirelessly to take our bit.

“Although we have already contributed, there is still much to be done.

“It is admirable the work of all these people, continue to help with what we can.

“Support your state collection centres and let the aid arrive!

The promoters from both sides have already started talks over a rematch but Golden Boy are first giving their Mexican hero time off.

Canelo – the loser in the eyes of most of the public apart from suspended judge Adalaide Byrd – was told to go on holiday by his team.

But he has decided to give his free time, as he recovers from the 12-round battle – to help those in need.

Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez – who looks after Canelo’s match-ups – says they will not leave GGG hanging around.

Gomez told ESPN: "I had conversations with [Golden Boy CEO] Oscar [De La Hoya] on Sunday and Monday, and we feel that's the best thing to do, to go straight into a rematch.

"I spoke to Tom (Loeffler, head of Golovkin’s K2 Promotions) a few times, and he's certainly open to it after taking to his side, so we agreed to sit down later this week and start discussing it.
