Championship Round-up: Huddersfield edge past Wolves to continue unbeaten streak while sorry Aston Villa lose again

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN went two points clear at the top of the Championship with a 1-0 win to Wolverhampton.

Rajiv van La Parra scored the only goal for Huddersfield as they beat his former club Wolves and continue their good start to the new season.

Wolves went close to score when Jon Dadi Bodvarsson had a header saved by Danny Ward from  range.

Van La Parra had a loan spell with Huddersfield last season and left Wolves to join the Terriers permanently.

It is now four wins out of five game for Huddersfield, drawing one away.

Bristol City 3-1 Aston Villa:

Aston Villa continue their dramatic start of the season as they record yet another defeat.

Villa opened early in the game when Jack Grealish diverted Leandro Bacuna’s cross at the back post.

But on the hour mark, newly relegated Villa fell when Tammy Abraham followed Lee Tomlin’s blocked shot with a tap-in.

Minutes later, Abraham set up Joe Bryan who finished in the far corner, before Tomlin’s scored Villa’s third with a curled a 20-yard free-kick.

Birmingham 3-0 Norwich City:

Birmingham earned their first home victory since March with a determined team against powerless Norwich.

David Davis headed in at the far post before Che Adams missed the target for the hosts after rounding the goalkeeper.

Clayton Donaldson doubled from the penalty spot after a Steven Whittaker foul in the box, minutes after Robert Tesche hit the bar from close range.

Domination kept flowing when he intercepted a poor Alex Tettey backpass to fire home a third goal.

The result means Norwich suffered their first defeat of the season at Birmingham.

Brentford 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday:

Brentford and Sheffield Wednesday drew 1-1 in a game which saw the Bees’ striker Lasse Vibe cast in the role of hero and villain.

Vibe, who captained Denmark at the recent Rio Olympics, took advantage of a mistake from Owls goalkeeper Keiren Westwood to put Brentford ahead after 54 minutes.

Wednesday then had veteran midfielder David Jones sent off for picking up two yellow cards.

But Sam Hutchinson claimed his first league goal in over two years in stoppage time to rescue a point for Sheffield Wednesday.

Wigan Athletic 0-1 QPR:

Queens Park Rangers ran out winners in a tight match at Wigan to avoid a third straight defeat.

QPR won 1-0 with Nedum Onuoha settling the contest three minutes after the break.

After an average start of the season for QPR, they now place fifth in the Championship table, while Norwich stand 12th.

Nottingham Forest 3-1 Leeds United:

Nottingham Forest as the hosts maintained their 100% home record with a deserved victory over Leeds United.

Pajtim Kasami scored in the 16th minute to give the hosts the lead, while Damien Perquis and Oliver Burke added in the 71st and 90th minute, respectively.

Leeds’ consolation came from a Kalvin Phillips free-kick seven minutes from time.

Barnsley 4-0 Rotherham United:

Barnsley cruised to a 4-0 victory as they took the derby spoils in their Yorkshire tussle against Rotherham at Oakwell.

Marc Roberts scrambled Barnsley ahead after 54 minutes before Adam Hammill’s deflected effort doubled the lead three minutes later.

Substitute Tom Bradshaw grabbed a third and the on-loan Ryan Kent added a fourth late on.

Blackburn Rovers 0-1 Fulham:

Fulham moved into second spot with a late winner at bottom-placed Blackburn.

The former Rovers striker Tom Cairney netted in the 94th minute after Ryan Sessegnon’s cross was only half cleared.

Cairney’s late goal leaves Blackburn bottom of the Championship with just one point from five matches.

Ipswich Town 1-0 Preston:

Grant Ward’s half-volley in the opening half gave Ipswich victory over Preston at Portman Road.

After Kevin Bru’s free-kick was only pushed away for Ward to control the ball before firing in the corner.

Ipswich were without Daryl Murphy at home to Preston with the striker seemingly set for a move to Newcastle.

Cardiff City 0-1 Reading:

Reading won 1-0 at Cardiff with Yann Kermorgant’s last-minute effort settling a scrappy encounter.

The hosts had the better chances in a stuttering first half, with Lex Immers twice heading over.

But Kermorgant collected a loose ball in the Cardiff box and struck a half-volley to seal Reading’s first away win of the season.
