Chapecoense to finally face Atletico Nacional four months after tragic Colombian air crash

ATLETICO NACIONAL players were met with a heroes’ welcome as they landed in Chapeco ahead of the Recopa Sudamericana.

Atletico were meant to meet Chapecoense in the Copa Sudamericana back in November before a tragic plane crash in the mountains of Colombia saw 71 people die – including 19 players and 24 members of the Chape coaching staff.

Atletico suggested that Chapecoense, who had been on the way to playing the biggest match in their history, be handed the trophy out of respect.

Not only was that gesture a stunning symbol of unity, it had real advantages for the club.

Winning the Sudamericana means Chape will make their bow in the Libertadores – the equivalent of the Champions League – this season, which will bring much needed revenue.

And four months after their match was cancelled, the two teams will finally face each other on Tuesday night, with the second leg on May 10.

Chapecoense manager Vagner Mancini said: “This isn’t just any match.

“This match represents a lot of history for Chapecoense.”

The Recopa, like the European Super Cup, is not given much air time usually, but this season the game will be different.

The crash united the football world as tragic details emerged from the wreckage.

Chapecoense have almost a whole new squad, while survivors such as Jackson Follman, Alan Ruschel and Helio Neto continue to undergo gruelling physiotherapy and deal with the aftermath of being on board.

A series of tributes have been planned for the game, including a ceremony of thanks ahead of kick-off.

The south Brazilian club are currently top of their regional league, Catarinense 1, having won five and drawn one of their six matches so far

Chape also won their first ever game in the Copa Libertadores, beating Zulia 2-1, but lost another group game to Argentinian club Lanus.
