Chelsea transfer news: Blues want Diego Costa to sign new contract as they aim to fend off Atletico Madrid interest

CHELSEA want Diego Costa to sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge – and consequently snub a sensational return to Atletico Madrid.

The Italian proved his managerial prowess when he was able to take full control of the team and use his preferred 3-4-3 formation following September’s embarrassing 3-0 defeat at Arsenal.

Conte has won all FIVE league games since and seen his back-three concede no goals.

Costa, 28, has been key to Chelsea‘s resurgent form, netting nine Premier League goals in 11 appearances.

The forward signed a five-year deal worth £150,000 a week when he joined in July 2014 for £32million.

According to the Daily Mirror the Blues want him to extend that contract, which runs out in 2019.

Costa scored 20 goals in his debut Chelsea season to help the Blues win their first title in four years.

Despite the Blues’ meltdown last campaign, in which they finished tenth, Costa still found the net 16 times in all competitions.

The Brazil-born star was pictured enjoying a reunion with Atletico manager Diego Simeone earlier this week.

But as uncertainty grows around Simeone’s future, with the Argentinian agreeing to a two-year contract REDUCTION at the Vicente Calderon, Chelsea are optimistic they can hold onto Costa long term.
