The defender said: “I saw a little bit (of the speculation). I don’t really know where that has come from. I can’t pay any interest in it.

“I am a Newcastle United player and my job is to stay here and hopefully be picking up a trophy at the end of the season.

With Kurt Zouma returning from injury and Andreas Christensen set to feature for Chelsea when his Borussia Monchengladbach loan expires next summer, Antonio Conte is keen to ensure he has players for the future.

John Terry is out of contract at the end of the season, with Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic and David Luiz all regarded as ‘experienced’ players.

Burnley ace Michael Keane and Middlesbrough star Ben Gibson are also on Chelsea’s radar, as is versatile Tottenham man Ben Davies.
