Lester was being asked to re-arrange his staff and make cuts, but he opted to go as his first stint in senior management ended in despair.

Former Chesterfield striker Lester returned to the club from Nottingham Forest’s Under-21s side but was unable to halt their slide.

Assistant Tommy Wright and coaches Nicky Eaden and Stewart Treacy are all going as Chesterfield prepare for a fresh start and lower budget in the National League.

Lester said: “I’ve spoken to Ashley Carson at length and I’m desperately sorry I’ve not been able to save the club from relegation.

“Looking ahead, with the proposed plans, I felt it correct for the club to move forward without me as manager.

“I would especially like to thank Dave Allen and Ashley Carson for their amazing support. They could have not done any more.
