Chinese Super League club Guangzhou Evergrande effectively release £37.5m flop Jackson Martinez

CHINESE Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande have effectively released £37.5m flop Jackson Martinez on a free.

The Colombian made his big-money move to the Far East from Atletico Madrid in February 2016.

But the 31-year-old’s time in Asia appears to be at an end after he was left out of their 31-man squad for the upcoming season.

Martinez forged a fearsome reputation for himself during a prolific spell with Porto.

And his 94 goals in 143 games in Portugal led to Atletico Madrid splashing out over £30m to bring him to Spain in 2015.

But he failed to replicate his scoring exploits in La Liga as he mustered just three strikes for Diego Simeone’s side.

And when Evergrande came calling with a then Chinese Super League record bid, Atletico decided to cash-in.

Jackson himself was richly-rewarded himself after penning a bumper contract.

However, he failed to repay the huge outlay on him throughout his injury-ravaged two-year stint.

The South American bagged just four times and was restricted to only 16 appearances.

Last summer he shared snaps of him in hospital following surgery on his ankle.

It was the second operation he had undergone on his left leg.

But Evergrande have now decided to cut their losses on the frontman after deeming him surplus to requirements.

Jackson is a Colombian international and has won 40 caps for his country, hitting the net on nine occasions for his homeland.

But his hopes of reclaiming a place in his country’s squad for this summer’s World Cup now appear to be completely over.
