England’s first ever para-triathlete gold medallist Jade Jones, 22, carried England’s flag after coming third in the T54 marathon.

Swimmer Duncan Scott, 20, was given the honour of holding the Saltire during the curtain-closer while gold medal-winning weightlifter Gareth Evans, 31, was given the Wales flag.

Australia dominated the medal table.

England and Tracey Neville got the better of them in a stunning netball final but the hosts racked up 198 medals in all – including 80 golds.

That was almost double the gold medal tally of second-placed England, who had 45 – with the same number of silvers – as part of their 136 total that included 46 bronzes.

India, with 26 golds and 66 medals overall came third in the table.

Seventh-placed Wales were the second best of the home nations, picking up ten golds as part of their 36 total.

Scotland came one place behind with nine golds, 13 silvers and 22 bronze medals.

Northern Ireland, meanwhile, impressed in the ring with boxing silver medals in their 12-medal haul.

There was more music than that provided by 31-year-old Bolt, who ramped up the crowd with his skills on the decks.

The Awesome Aussie Sisters blasted out some tunes and 2013 Australian X Factor winner Dami Im impressed on the piano.

The closing ceremony in Australia doubled as a handover celebration to the second city.

And Jacqui Kennedy of the city’s council said: “Congratulations to the Gold Coast for a wonderful Games.

“Today the people of Birmingham will help us welcome the Games during the handover ceremony and we have up to 400 young children involved.

“It’s going to be amazing.”
