Sturridge, 27, looked certain to start off as  a sub because of  a poor display in last month’s 0-0 draw in Slovenia.

Interim boss Southgate thought about playing skipper Wayne Rooney in the No 9 role.

His Spurs pal Eric Dier is set to partner Jordan Henderson in a 4-2-3-1.

And Tottenham full-backs Kyle Walker and Danny Rose were  both doubts but will play.

Yet  Rose,  struggling with an ankle issue, will return to Spurs after tonight’s game.

He will  miss Tuesday’s  Spain friendly but England could turn to  Ryan Bertrand or  Aaron Cresswell at left-back.
