Daniel Wilkinson tributes pour in after non-league and former Hull player dies after collapsing on the pitch

HUNDREDS of tributes have been paid to a “popular” footballer who died in hospital after suffering a suspected heart attack during a game.

Daniel Wilkinson, 26, collapsed on the pitch when he was playing for Shaw Lane Aquaforce in an Integro Doodson League Cup match against Evo-Stik Northern Premier League team Brighouse Town on Monday.

Medics and volunteers rushed onto the pitch to try to bring round the semi-professional player.

It is believed the defender, an ex-Hull City academy graduate, suffered a cardiac arrest during the second half of the away game.

CPR was administered before he was rushed by ambulance to the Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax, West Yorks, but sadly later died.

Wilkinson worked as an accountant in Sheffield and was hoping to buy a house in the city with his girlfriend.

John Warner, managing partner of the firm, said: “All of Dan’s colleagues and friends at BHP are devastated to hear this sad news and our thoughts are with his family at this awful time.

“Dan joined us to complete his placement year in 2014, as part of his studies at Loughborough University where he was studying Accountancy & Finance.

“He immediately became an extremely popular member of BHP’s team and made many friends amongst his colleagues.

“He successfully completed his degree this summer and joined us as a graduate trainee within our Audit & Accounts team, to begin his professional ACA studies.”

Shaw Lane AFC chairman Craig Wood released a statement on behalf of the club.

Mr Wood said: “It’s with great sadness that we have to announce the tragic loss of Daniel Wilkinson who has sadly passed away after collapsing on the pitch during the game on Monday night, our thoughts and prayers are with him family and friends at this time.

“The club would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt messages and thoughts that we have received throughout the night. There are no more words at this time.”

Dozens of clubs across non-league football paid tribute to the defender.

Dianne Jones from Stafford Rangers said: “We all stand as one in the football world in times like this, so very very sad, so very young, thoughts and prayers to all Daniel’s family and all at Shaw Lane.”

Philip Earl Words, vice-chairman of Bedford United said: “I cannot express how I feel for you all at Shaw Lane. Utterly awful and I am so sad for Daniel, his family and everyone at the club. Heartfelt condolences.”

Sharon Harrison posted on Facebook: “RIP from a Kidderminster Harriers fan. Such a tragedy. Heartfelt sympathies to his family and to the staff and supporters of Shaw Lane.”

Lisa Macormac added: “Sending our deepest condolences on behalf of myself and all at Warrington Town FC. Our thoughts & prayers are with Daniel’s family, friends & everyone at Shaw Lane during this difficult time. God Bless Daniel.”

Wilkinson also played for Goole AFC and Scarborough Athletic, before joining Rushall Olympic.

He left the Walsall-based club in the summer, to join Shaw Lane, combining non-league action with his university placement at BHP.

Wilkinson’s manager at Goole, and former Sheffield United midfielder Curtis Woodhouse, paid tribute via social media. He said: “Really can’t believe the news about Dan Wilkinson, I managed Dan at Goole and he was a very good player and a really nice lad RIP brother”.
