And ahead of the club’s first match since his death, Derry’s players lined up wearing McBride’s number 5 shirt.

They then played with black armbands bearing the number.

The Under-17 and Under-19 teams were also involved as they lined up on the pitch in a five shape, while a minute’s applause was held and balloons were released at Maginn Park in McBride’s memory.

Unfortunately the occasion got to Derry as Bray secured a last gasp 3-2 win to inflict a first defeat of the season on the Candystripes.

Gary McCabe and Aaron Greene had given the visitors a 2-0 half time lead before a penalty from Aaron McEnuff and a goal from Dean Jarvis saw Derry level the scores.

But a 93rd minute strike from Bray's Tim Clancy meant it was heartbreak for the club McBride captained.

The former Derry skipper's funeral was held last Thursday with his team-mates forming a guard of honour as he was carried into the church for Requiem Mass.

Among the hundreds who attended was Irish president Michael D Higgins.

McBride lived right next to Maginn Park and was nicknamed 'Captain Fantastic' by The Candystripes' supporters.
