HE MAY be known for not saying a great deal with England, although Wayne Bennett got much better as the World Cup went on.
But he came out fighting even though his Brisbane side beat South Sydney 24-20 after a controversial no-try call.
Kodi Nikorima appeared to have scored a legitimate try but the ‘bunker’ – the NRL’s group of centrally-based on-screen officials – said no.
That did not sit well with Bennett, despite the Broncos’ victory over Souths, who had both Thomas and George Burgess in their side, with Sam suspended.
“It’s hard to justify to me why it wasn’t a try,” said the coach.
“I’m comfortable enough with those decisions when they can’t make a decision but that was pretty obvious to everybody that that ball was on the ground and on the tryline.
“After that it doesn’t matter what they rule, that’s what The Bunker’s there for to overrule that.”
Thomas Burgess was unimpressed with his side’s display in his 100th Rabbitohs game, saying: “It was disappointing to lose narrowly and we’ll look to bounce back.
“We’ve got to keep working. We were very disappointed, it was ours to win and we needed to be more ruthless.”
Gareth Widdop and James Graham are back on top of the NRL after st George-Illawarra beat Sydney Roosters 24-8 in the ANZAC Day clash.
Former Hull KR man Ken Sio booted three goals as England man Chris Heighington’s Newcastle beat Manly 18-12 while Elliott Whitehead was part of Canberra’s first win at North Queensland since 2006.
Meanwhile, former Rugby Football League chief executive Nigel Wood was at the Queensland Cup meeting between Burleigh Bears and PNG Hunters, meeting members of the Papua New Guinea side ahead of taking a job at the Rugby League International Federation.
