England cricket captain Joe Root taken to hospital with severe dehydration


ENGLAND cricket captain Joe Root is in hospital with severe dehydration, vomiting and diarrhoea.

There is now a real worry that he will not be fit to resume his innings against Australia in The Ashes fifth test, scheduled to start at 11.30pm tonight (Sunday).

Root ended day four of the fifth Test unbeaten on 42 in a partnership with Jonny Bairstow.

England are on 93-4 in their second innings after making 346 in the first.

Australia declared on 649-7 meaning England face an almost impossible task not to lose what has been a disastrous tour 4-0.

Root batted for almost three hours on a day where temperatures reached 47.5 degrees Celsius in Sydney.

It is the region’s hottest weather for 79 years.

At one point during his innings, the medical team were forced to come to Root’s assistance, where he was provided with water.
