According to The Times, he will sit alongside FA chief Martin Glenn, chairman Greg Clarke, technical director Dan Ashworth and former caretaker boss Howard Wilkinson.

They are likely to offer Gareth Southgate a four-year contract worth £2million a year.

England last night blew a two-goal lead in the dying minutes of their friendly with Spain to end in a disappointing 2-2 tie.

But the FA have always insisted they wanted to give Southgate until last night’s game to prove himself before beginning the process of appointing a new manager.

It should not take long though – Southgate, 46, is comfortably the front-runner for the job.

Le Saux, 48, was at Wembley last night to watch the game – and has been in brief contact with his fellow panellists.

The former Southampton, Rovers and Stamford Bridge man played alongside Southgate in the late 90s and were both part of Glenn Hoddle’s England World Cup squad at France 98.

Southgate said after the game: "I've no idea what happens now. I've got a few days at home and a load of meetings in the diary for next week.

"We've got an Under-21 tournament next summer and the draw is being made next month.

"I've no idea which office I need to go in or which space I'm going to park my car in."
