England RU star George Ford admits he’d love to play rugby league one day

GEORGE Ford has opened the door to a sensational cross-code switch by declaring he would love to play rugby league.

The England RU star grew up playing the 13-a-side code his dad Mike played in Oldham, Greater Manchester but joined Leicester rather than Bradford Bulls as a 16-year-old.

But the self-confessed St Helens fan insists he would love to go back to his first love.

Leicester fly-half Ford, 25, said: “I’d always love to. I’ve always missed the game and I love watching it still.

“I’d love to have a crack at rugby league. My involvements would be a lot more and that’s all you want. You want ball in your hand so I’d love to give it a go.

“I want to achieve more in union and at 25, I think I’ve got a few more years in it yet but I would actually love to have a crack at rugby league again.

“I make eight, maybe nine tackles a game tops in union and you see league lads make 40 and you think, ‘Fair play.’

“I’d like to have a crack in the halves one day I’m not saying I’d be any good but I’d enjoy it.”

Ford is currently with England preparing for the summer series against South Africa and he revealed he and fellow northener Owen Farrell have been nicknamed after some of comedian Sacha Baron Cohen’s film characters.

He added to the Whippets and Flat Caps podcast: “They call us the Butcher Boys of Grimsby. They can’t understand what we’re saying still.”
