Despite defeat to Germany in their last outing, Gareth Southgate’s Lions looked in high spirits as they trained in the sunshine at Tottenham’s training centre.

Kane’s absence from the national side has handed the opportunity to veteran forward Jermain Defoe who could make his first England appearance since November 2013.

And 34-year-old Defoe will be hoping to pass down his experience to some of the younger generation hoping to impress Southgate.

Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson could make his international debut after his emergency call-up following injuries to Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.

Gibson, 24, has been in fine form for the relegation-threatened side this season and has been linked with a £25million move to the Premier League big boys.

Marcus Rashford is also pushing for a start having been used as a late sub against Germany.

The Manchester United ace has yet to score a competitive goal for his country after opening his account in a friendly against Australia last year.

Southgate looks set to stick with the three at the back formation which will likely involve Burnley's Michael Keane after his impressive debut on Wednesday.

Goalkeeper Joe Hart will skipper the side in the absence of Gary Cahill, Smalling and Jordan Henderson.

But Southgate admits minds will also be focused on the horrific terror attack that killed four people in London on Wednesday.

He said: "We know how important the national football team is for the feeling of the nation.

"It's a great opportunity for everybody to pay their respects and to show we go on.

“Not just London, but the nation. That's our identity, historically.

“I thought the tribute before the France game was very poignant. This will be the same."
