SLOVENIA head coach Srecko Katanec says he is  delighted that England are to drop captain Wayne Rooney for their World Cup qualifying clash tomorrow night.

Despite being England’s record goalscorer, Rooney has netted just once in 12 appearances for club and country this season, and played poorly as they beat Malta 2-0 last weekend – but Katanec would still rather see him on the substitutes’ bench.

He said: “I would prefer it if he doesn’t start because of his experience and quality. He is still a leader for England.

“He is the leader and as the leader – a captain who has played a lot of matches in the national team – such a man is not that easy to substitute out. He has the experience a captain needs.

“But I would not be surprised if he doesn’t start the game.  He is not the youngest anymore and maybe his form has taken a little dip – he is not at such a level as required of him by journalists.

“England are a better quality team in every way and we expect it to be very tough.

“They have very quick players and are very fast in transition from defence to attack. But we don’t need to be afraid of the game or afraid to lose. The guys are unburdened.”

England sit top of Group F with maximum points from their first two matches, while Slovenia are third in the table with four points. FACEBOOK-PROMO-FOOTBALL2
