And he reckons it’s “not bad!”

Millwall fan Plant, 25, finished on four over after two rounds and is the only amateur to make the cut at Royal Birkdale.

Now he will etch his name into history on a list that includes names such as Justin Rose, who took the honour here 19 years ago.

And asked about joining 14-time Major winner Woods and former Open winner McIlroy, Plant said: “That’s not bad is it?

“Hopefully I’ll follow in their footsteps, that would be great.

“I’d like to see the list of who’s won it before. It’s a great achievement.”

Plant looked like chucking away his chance at history with a five over front nine in a windswept and rain-hit Birkdale.

The Open 2017 - Round two recap

JORDAN SPIETH leads the way on six under par – thanks in part to a “gross” shot that led to an eagle.

The two-time Major champ hit a sliced approach into the par five 15th and converted the putt to reach seven under.

He bogeyed the next and parred in to add a one under 69 to his opening 65 and sit two ahead of fellow American Matt Kuchar.

US Open champion Brooks Koepka is alongside Ian Poulter in a share of third on three under.

And Scot Richie Ramsay is fifth on two under, one ahead of a group of players including Rory McIlroy and England’s Richard Bland.

But a clutch eagle on the par five 15 saved the day and he made pars on the closing holes to book his spot for the weekend.

He has been roared on by the 150-strong Team Alfie all week who packed grandstands and carried boards in support of their man.
