Everton news: Leighton Baines and Gareth Barry agree new contracts at Goodison Park

EVERTON have tied down Leighton Baines, Gareth Barry and Mason Holgate to new contracts at Goodison Park.

Long-serving former England international left-back Baines, 32, was in discussions with the Toffees hierarchy since the summer and extends his deal until June 2019.

And midfielder Barry, also a former England star, has signed an extension until the summer of 2018 to extend his huge amount of Premier League appearances.

Only Ryan Giggs has played more top flight games than the 35-year-old, who joined Everton from Manchester City in 2014.

And Holgate, the England Under-21 defender who joined the club from Barnsley last year and impressed in his limited appearances, has also extended his contract, signing a new four-and-a-half year deal.

Ronald Koeman, the Everton manager, said: “Players like Leighton, Phil Jagielka and Gareth Barry are leaders in our dressing room and on the pitch.

“For younger players, they are a little bit like teachers. They have that experience and young players need to listen to them for they will learn.

“Mason is one of the big talents at the club. Of course, he started playing this season and did a great job.

“He can play out of different positions in the team defensively. He was really comfortable when he got his chance in the team.”

Baines was in the final year of his previous contract which he signed after Everton resisted approaches from Manchester United in 2013.

The ex-Wigan Athletic defender, who arrived at Goodison in 2007, has been hampered by injury in recent seasons, but remains Everton’s first-choice left-back as he battled with Bryan Oviedo.
